Sea buckthorn (also known as Hippophae rhamnoides L) is thought to have many health benefits and contains anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Because of its many beneficial components such as omega-3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, it can be an excellent addition to your skincare regimen.
Mechanism and evidence:
Sea buckthorn is thought to work on various skin conditions like acne due to its ability to regulate oil production and nourish and protect the skin. A small scale clinical trial evaluated the plant extract, Hippophae rhamnoides, in patients with acne. The study showed clinical improvement of acne after 12 weeks and a statistically significant decrease in the level of sebum (oil) production.
The benefits of sea buckthorn don’t stop with acne. Another clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effect of sea buckthorn on stem cells that are involved in regenerative and reparative functions (also known as potential anti-aging benefits). Blood samples were drawn from 12 healthy volunteers after consuming a 500mg proanthocyanidin-rich extract of sea buckthorn (one of the main antioxidants in sea buckthorn). The study found that the extract resulted in the mobilization of stem cell types involved in regenerative and reparative functions which is promising for antiaging benefits.
How can I incorporate sea buckthorn into my routine?
To unlock the benefits of sea buckthorn oil for your skin, sea buckthorn can be incorporated in a few different ways, ranging from supplements to being an ingredient in your skincare. Two of my favorite skincare products is a sea buckthorn based cleansing and facial oil. The cleansing oil can be applied directly to the skin or on a wet cotton pad to wipe away the day followed by application of the facial oil directly onto slightly damp skin. They key thing to look for is the striking orange color of the sea buckthorn berry in your products.
